Blackbird Gardens in Petoskey is unique from other LGF partners in that it practices the principles of permaculture. Permaculture, by definition, is organic, but it strives for more than that, by emphasizing sensitivity to the interconnectedness of the world. Ecological concerns are dealt with carefully, and every attempt is made to minimize them. Blackbird Gardens, in accordance with these principles, makes use of natural materials, such as timber frame and straw bale constructions, in its buildings on site. Guests will tour these as well as the fruitful organic fields that provide food for many local restaurants and residents, as well as for three nearby farmers markets.

Blackbird Gardens is one of the most progressive farms we visit, if we may put them on a scale. Its commitment to building a strong local food network has and will continue to make the area around it a better place to live.
